ESARQ Lecturer David Baena Inaugurates Latest Project

On Thursday, 19 June 2014, David Baena, a lecturer in the ESARQ Area of Architectural Construction, inaugurated his latest project, Joan Maragall Library, in Barcelona's Sant Gervasi district, along with his partner from BCQ Arquitectura.

Located in the gardens of Villa Florida, Joan Maragall Library is a new local cultural facility. It is now the main library in the city’s Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district and provides service to local residents in addition to Clarà Library and Collserola-Josep Miracle Library.

The garden covering the grounds of the new library now reaches the street level, thanks to the new entrance to the garden.

The building consists of “courtyards of light and silence” and “courtyards of books and knowledge”. The light and silence courtyards are surrounded by glass and provide the interior with light and ventilation while isolating the library from the outside. The books and knowledge courtyards are concrete structures full of books that form part of the library's support structure.

A library without natural light is a library without life. The fact that the project involved underground construction and maintaining the wall around the old garden meant it was necessary to create several alternating courtyards as lightwells.

The aim of creating calm, comfortable reading places was key when deciding on the materials to be used in the interior space. According to architects Baena and Casamor, one of the best ways to create harmony and serenity in the space was to reduce the variety of materials and textures.
