ESARQ Students in Master's in International Cooperation Present Research on Fondo District

On Thursday, 19 December 2013, in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, a group of students in the Master's Programme in International Cooperation and Sustainable Emergency Architecture at the ESARQ School of Architecture presented the socio-spatial research project they had prepared in a workshop on the Fondo district of Barcelona.

The presentation was held at the facilities of Fondo Comerç, an association of business owners and professionals in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, and was attended by members of the Urbanism Area of Santa Coloma de Gramenet City Council.

Under the supervision of lecturers Carmen Mendoza, Marta Benages, Ivan Llach and Apen Ruiz, the students spent two weeks analysing the socio-spatial reality of the Fondo neighbourhood in Santa Coloma de Gramenet. They also gathered data in the neighbourhood for three days and interviewed members of the Fondo Comerç association. The aim was to increase students’ awareness of the strategic value of cultural resources with the objective of bolstering the local identity and community participation. The Fondo public market was proposed as a way of integrating the neighbourhood. The market was designed by UIC lecturer Felip Pich-Aguilera.

Today, in the outskirts of cities like Barcelona, there is a considerable mixture of cultural and social activities, as in the case of Fondo. This complexity calls for the acknowledgement of the intricate relationship between spaces for cultural diversity and physical spaces for urban activities. With this condition, the students in the subject tried to determine how architecture can become a reference for the community and how the design of spaces can be a strong catalyst for change.
