Essay Anthology Published by Lecturer and Alumni from Master’s in International Cooperation: Sustainable Emergency Architecture
The book Development in Context: Challenges and Sustainable Strategies was recently presented in the Garden Hall at the UIC Barcelona School of Architecture. The book was edited by Carmen Mendoza, co-director of the Master’s Programme in International Cooperation, and programme alumni Mbongeni Ngulube and Ana Cañizares.
Development in Context contains a series of essays on urban improvement and other spatial practices in the field of development. It features essays by programme alumni and lecturers, including Nathaniel Corum and Reena Tiwari, both of whom are well known for their sustainable urban practices.
The book departs from the typical discourse on development. Instead, it views real-world development in the only way that can lead to concrete action: in context.
While development remains difficult to achieve, its associate practices, rituals and institutions make up real experiences that affect countless communities across the globe. The book’s critical discussions subscribe to the view that tired theory must be overcome with real solutions.
This is the programme’s second publication, following Reflections, which came out in 2011.
The Master’s Programme in International Cooperation: Sustainable Emergency Architecture is the only programme that prepares architects to develop and rebuild communities affected by unexpected urbanization, poverty, conflicts or natural disasters. It is part of the Erasmus Mundus European cooperation programme and is administered by the UIC Barcelona School of Architecture.
