Experts Analyse Physical Therapy for Breast Cancer at the UIC

On Friday, 22 November 2013, the oncologist Pere Monràs and the physical therapist Laura Pacheco participated in the roundtable discussion «Physical Therapy for Cancer Patients: A Holistic Vision in Breast Cancer Treatment». According to the two experts, cancer treatment should take a new direction and focus more on the patient than the disease.

Pacheco discussed the design of physical therapy treatment for women with breast cancer and stressed that it is necessary to bring together an entire healthcare team and a sound strategy for the patient, not the disease.

In the same vein, Dr. Pere Monràs emphasized the importance of knowledge gained from personal experience. He talked about how such experiences can be powerful enough to give rise to specific improvements in the lives of those with diseases like breast cancer. Monràs stated that reflective practice, tacit knowledge, cooperation and co-creation are very effective tools for addressing any issue in the healthcare field. The roundtable discussion ended with a few general comments and a question-and-answer session.

Pere Monràs is an oncologist, the CEO of Helix3c and a founding member of the Circle for Knowledge. He is the former director of the Parc Taulí Health Corporation. Laura Pacheco is a sports physical therapist and a lecturer from the Department of Physical Therapy in the UIC Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. More than 80 people attended the event, which was held on the UIC's Sant Cugat campus.
