Experts from Yale University and St Olaf College give two seminars to our Psychology students

Two clinical psychologists have shared their experience in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders in childhood and adolescence with third-year students on our Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology

Dr Christi Bostwick from St Olaf College, and Dr Carla Marín from Yale University, gave two seminars to third-year students on our Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology as part of the subject on Psychopathology in Childhood and Adolescence. The two events were held online and had a significant practical and dynamic focus.

The first session was held on 21 September by Dr Bostwick. In her talk, “Clinical Interviews with Young Children”, the researcher spoke to the future psychologists about ways to interview children effectively, picking up on emotional and behavioural symptoms that might be affecting their daily lives.

The second session, by Dr Marín, was held on 19 October. Her talk, “Psychopathology in Childhood and Adolescence”, saw the doctor present some of the most common anxiety disorders in childhood and tools to assess and differentiate their symptoms from other disorders. She also talked about analysing the role parents and families can play in giving rise to and sustaining specific symptoms of anxiety. “The talk was an enriching experience”, said student Ana Morente. “I found it really interesting that she highlighted the importance of working with families, because in the end they play a fundamental role when it comes to treating children.”

“The fact we can complement our subjects with talks like these by internationally renowned experts in clinical psychology offers us a unique, innovative perspective of child psychopathology”, said Iris Pérez and Susana Pujol, the coordinators of the subject on Psychopathology in Childhood and Adolescence and active psychologists at Support, the university clinic. “It’s also an opportunity for students to ask questions about current issues and gain a unique insight into the global reality of an increasingly complex world.”
