Faculty of Humanities Creates an App Promoting Career Options for Humanities Graduates

The UIC’s Faculty of Humanities has teamed up with industry professionals and Barcelona City Council’s Institute of Culture (ICUB) to create a smartphone app aimed at helping young people with an interest in the humanities to discover a wide range of career options.

“The idea for the Cultural Job Game app arose from numerous conversations with secondary school students and teachers. They often ask us about the career options for the Humanities degree programme, so this app aims to answer their queries in the form of a fun, educational game”, said Teresa Vallès, the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities.

The app takes the form of a Trivial Pursuit-style quiz game and includes a number of different levels. Once users have completed a level, they can watch a brief video in which industry professionals talk about what their jobs involve. The figures appearing in the videos include Marius Serra, a cultural journalist; Berta Ribé, the Head of Educational Services at the Barcelona Museum of Music; Ruben García, the Product Manager at Club TR3SC; and Paquita Navarro, the Head of Digitization Projects at the National Library of Catalonia.

Those who complete all the levels of the app will have the opportunity to sign up for a roundtable discussion and prize draw, to be held on Thursday, 30 April 2015 (deadline for submitting entries: Monday, 20 April 2015). First prize is an 80% discount on tuition for the first academic year of a Humanities and Cultural Studies degree programme, which the winner can give to a sibling, child or spouse or, if he or she is a secondary school teacher, one of his or her students.

Other prizes include membership of the TR3SC Culture Club, €30 gift vouchers to spend at the FNAC department store and various UIC-branded items.

The app is available for Android devices at the Google Play Store.
