The Faculty of Humanities gives secondary school students public speaking training

Fifteen groups from twelve different schools have already taken part in the public speaking workshops organised by the Faculty of Humanities at the university. In the morning, the students learned oral communication techniques geared towards presenting their "Research Project".

The training, delivered by lecturer Fernando Carrera, has gained wide acceptance among the students, who view the sessions' dynamics as a pleasant, entertaining way to face their fears and become more secure when addressing an audience.

According to Carrera, unlike other countries, "very few schools in Spain have taken measures to promote the world of debate, and students entering university have clear weaknesses." The purpose of these courses is to help students get out of this all too common rut. "If the schools gave children public speaking training", continues the workshop lecturer, "these children would 'break' a lot of the barriers they encounter upon reaching university. Insecurity is a major problem when it comes to speaking in public."

Thus, in groups of up to thirty-six young men and women, secondary students learn the basic mechanisms of public speaking. "It was a very practical, beneficial workshop", said one of the teachers from El Pinar school. "The students now have a much better understanding of the mechanisms required for speaking in public."

These public speaking seminars were possible thanks to the 'la Caixa' Foundation, which, as part of the Aid Programme for Social Initiative Projects, provided the Faculty of Humanities a grant to carry out this project, which was submitted within the 2014 call for Social Action and Interculturalism project applications.
