First Economic Evaluation of Medicines and Health Technologies Seminar in London
Dr. Marta Trapero Bertran, a researcher in the UIC Barcelona Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences, was the director of the first edition of the seminar “Economic Evaluation of Medicines and Health Technologies”, a joint programme between the UIC Barcelona and City University London held on Wednesday to Friday, 8-10 July 2015.
The people responsible for health planning and management in Spain and who participate in the design of future policies and the development of decision-making and planning strategies for health budgets should explicitly include health innovation in the healthcare system. This is currently a challenge for healthcare providers, professional organizations and decision makers, especially in the current context of economic restrictions.
The seminar showed how economic evaluation can help improve health policy decision making in Spain through the process of sharing experiences with colleagues in the United Kingdom, where economic evaluation has traditionally been used to make better decisions on health policy.
The objectives of the seminar were to transfer knowledge on the key points of economic evaluation and the techniques and tools used in this kind of analysis. This helped participants gain a broad vision of how economic evaluation can be used to make better health policy decisions all over the world.
The seminar was one of the outcomes of the agreement signed by the UIC Barcelona and City University London. The second edition of the seminar is expected to be held at the end of next academic year.
