First-year Communication Sciences Students Visit Newsrooms

First-year students in the UIC's Faculty of Communication Sciences paid a visit to media newsrooms in Barcelona, including the free daily 20 minutos and Sport, a daily sports newspaper. This outings were part of the Written Communication course taught by Professor Consuelo León.

On Wednesday,
15 February 2012, a number of first-year students in the Faculty of
Communication Sciences toured the offices of the daily newspaper
20 minutos, where they talked to editor Toni Ayala about the
practice of journalism, the creation of new online business models and the
paper’s plans for a new website.

The next
day, another group of first-year students in the Journalism Programme visited
the offices of Sport, a sports daily.
Ramón Palomares, a basketball and golf writer at the paper, welcomed them and explained
the structure of the newspaper to the budding communication professionals. He
explained how advertising is always printed on odd pages in order to make a
stronger visual impact on the reader.
Palomares also spoke about the differences between the work of multimedia
journalists and print journalists at the newspaper.

These outings are part of a series of visits to
different media outlets as part of the Written Communication course taught by
Consuelo León in the Faculty of Communication Sciences’ three degree programmes: Journalism, Audiovisual Communication and Advertising.

The goal of these visits is for students to experience
a newsroom environment firsthand and form an idea of how it works. The visits
also provide an initial point of contact with the real world of journalism and
communication and help equip students with the tools they will need to navigate
the job market and give focus to their future careers.
