Humanities lecturer Jordi Bermejo talks about theatre and entertainment spaces of 18th century Barcelona

His presentation took place within the framework of the fifth Baroque Heritage Day organised by the University of Barcelona

Jordi Bermejo Gregorio, lecturer at the Faculty of Humanities, teaches courses in the degree in Humanities and Cultural Studies. He participated in the 5th Baroque Heritage Day on Wednesday 20 April, organised by the Research Group ACPA2 – Art and culture in modern Barcelona (17th and 18th centuries), at the Faculty of Geography and History of the University of Barcelona.

The event was dedicated to daily life in the 17th and 18th centuries of Barcelona. It featured the lectures of several specialists in history and art history to talk about aspects such as the urban layout of 17th century Barcelona, social practices and musical tastes, the gastronomy of the time and the mobilisation of the public life of fraternities and guilds in the Catalan city.

Bermejo’s collaboration was the paper “Theatre and entertainment spaces of Barcelonians” in which he provided a panoramic view of theatre spaces in 18th century Barcelona. Among them he highlighted the Teatro de la Santa Creu, the only public theatre in the city, and its Italian opera and Spanish theatre programme. He also spoke about the importance of performances in private homes, called “salons and alcoves”, which have a special relevance, since it was there that the taste for minor forms of theatre like entremeses and sainetes performed in Catalan was developed, along with other dramatic and musical expressions of the time.
