Humanities students travel to the heart of Austria

Students experienced an academic outing during which they enjoyed the art, music and architecture of Vienna.

Vienna is a city of contrasts.  The most traditional architecture coexists with marked modernism and a desire to preserve its past history as a hub for intellectuals and artists from all over Europe.  In short, the capital of Austria is a city with a lively history which students from the Faculty of Humanities were able to enjoy while on an academic trip.

As part of this cross-disciplinary workshop organised by the Faculty, students visited the European city for five days, accompanied by Dr Bernat Torres, a lecturer from the Faculty of Humanities.

The group went to St. Stephen’s Cathedral as well as Saint Peter’s Church.  They also visited the city centre and the main palaces that house museums such as the Belvedere, containing a collection of paintings by Gustav Klimt.

The students also had the opportunity to visit the “Monet to Picasso” exhibition at the Albertina Museum, the History of Art Museum in Vienna and the Vienna Opera House, where they were able to attend Faust.

As a precursor to the academic trip, students also attended a series of talks in which the role and the history of the Austrian city was analysed from different perspectives.
