Javier Junceda Discusses Asturian Electoral Reform in Asturian Parliament

On Thursday, 11 April 2013, Dr. Javier Junceda, the Dean of the UIC Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences, appeared as an expert before the Special Commission of Study and Debate on Electoral System Reform in the Asturian Parliament.

"Electoral system reform in the Principality of Asturias is sure to offer the opportunity to provide changes that will allow for greater citizen participation and democracy in the face of the political disaffection that is currently prevalent in society", Junceda said in his appearance before the commission.

"I am in favour of the British electoral system, in which those who win in each district are those who have seats in Parliament", explained Junceda, "but this is something we don't have here and that is why reform can be approached with constituencies and proportionality. 45 members of Parliament representing 45 districts would be a viable option".

The dean also discussed electronic voting, which he believes is another issue this legislative initiative can address. In this regard, he emphasized how new technologies currently affect our daily lives.
