Jef Schröder: “Growth, friendship and knowledge are the words I would use to describe my time at UIC Barcelona”
In this interview, former UIC Barcelona student from the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences expresses his reaction to winning Best University Curriculum 2020-2021, presented by the Catalan Society of Economists
You have just received the 2020-2021 Best University Curriculum Award from the Catalan Society of Economists. How was the experience?
When they told me, I was quite surprised. I didn't expect to win because some of my classmates are extremely talented and I've learned a great deal from them. In fact, I thought one of them would win because they all have outstanding track records and have performed so well throughout the course of the bachelor’s degree.
What would you say to your classmates?
Even though in the end they awarded me the prize, I would like to share it with them because we all deserve recognition for finishing the degree programme. We have grown up and matured both academically and personally and worked hard to the best of our abilities.
I understand that it's great news for you on a personal level, too.
Definitely. I am very proud to have been awarded this recognition. I am very grateful to UIC Barcelona and it is an honour to be recognised and rewarded for my perseverance and efforts over the past four years.
What will you take from your time here now that you are an alumnus?
I would describe my time at university in three words: growth, friendship and knowledge. These four years have taught me to see that university is a unique stage in life and that I should enjoy and take full advantage of it. I believe that everyone who has joined me on this journey has helped me to mature, progress and achieve the objectives that I set myself.
Are there any special memories you’ll take with you?
I really value the family atmosphere at the University. We are all willing to help each other to make our university experience unforgettable. I’ll remember specific things, such as greeting Andrés each morning, which helped inspire and motivate me to face the day ahead, and of course the coffee breaks with my friends.
I understand that it has not been at all easy, what with the pandemic and online classes.
That has been the most difficult part. I have always been a fan of face-to-face teaching, so the sudden and unexpected change we had to face was a challenge. Fortunately, thanks to the cooperation of students and the University, we managed to pull through in a remarkable way. I am convinced that the pandemic presented both a challenge and an important learning curve that has strengthened and better prepared us for the future.
So, what will your next step be?
Since I graduated last June, I have taken some time to reflect on and develop the ideas I had about what I want to do and where I want to go. I think it is a vital step in finding something that fulfils and motivates you.
What did you decide?
I've chosen the world of digital consulting, a sector in which you learn quickly and see how companies operate from a wide variety of areas (banking, technology, pharmaceuticals, etc.). I have also always been very interested in everything related to the digital world, and I always jumped at the chance to take subjects related to technology offered on the degree programme.
Will you stay here or will you travel?
I would like to work abroad in the future. I have applied to several positions abroad over the past few months, but unfortunately the pandemic has made the process very difficult. That being said, I am not going to give up and I am convinced that, as more of us get vaccinated and the virus subsides, I will be able to achieve my goal.
