Josep Talavera, CEO of Mundimoto, in the Ciclo Emprèn: “Pivoting is not failure; it is understanding the needs of the market and adapting to them”

The CEO and co-founder of Mundimoto, Josep Talavera, took part in the second session of the Ciclo Emprèn series, which looked at the revolution in the buying and selling of second-hand goods. The session included a second part where Talavera was interviewed by Óscar Porcel, lecturer in the Bachelor’s Degrees in Bioengineering and Psychology, co-founder and managing partner of Solutia and co-director of the @bioemprendedores podcast.

During the second session of the Ciclo Emprèn, Josep Talavera shared the importance of being clear about why we start a business: "It doesn't matter what you do, but everyone should be clear about why they want to start a business. It's not just about an idea or a business opportunity, but about a purpose,” said the CEO of Mundimoto.

Today, Josep Talavera is co-founder and CEO of Mundimoto Group, founder of DECOWOOD and an investor in multiple startups. Throughout his career, Talavera remarked that in his career he has amassed over 60 failures and from those he has learned valuable lessons, including the notion that "failure is part of success". He went on to say that out of his many failed attempts, successful ideas have been born.

The CEO also shared details about his personal journey and highlighted that one of the main drivers of his success has been the pursuit of personal and professional freedom that entrepreneurship provides. "Don't do it out of obligation, do it out of happiness. Along with resilience, that is the basis for success," he said.
During the talk, he also addressed the key need to find complementary partners in the entrepreneurship process. Talavera emphasized that "partners must have different profiles, because this is what allows for greater creativity and more effective management of the business."

Another key aspect he highlighted was the ability to adapt and pivot according to market needs. In the case of Mundimoto, the company has managed to combine a single business model with a recurring one, through a motorcycle rental system. "Pivoting is not failing; on the contrary, it is understanding the needs of the market and adapting to them," said Talavera.

The event began with an institutional welcome by Òscar Carbó, director of the Centre for Knowledge Transfer and Research Valorisation at UIC Barcelona. This session marks the closing of the fourth edition of the Emprèn Cycle, which aims to provide students, alums and researchers with a solid foundation of training in topics related to project financing, legal requirements and the public tools necessary to launch a business.
