Júlio Fernández, graduation special guest: "nursing is the voice, hands and strength of the patients”

Júlio Fernández, nurse and director of health management for the Valencia local government, was the guest of honour at the Nursing and the Master's Degree in Clinical Research graduation ceremony. In his speech, he encouraged recent graduates to be "the leaders of the change in nursing".
Fernández described the profession of nursing as "a profession that makes you the voice, hands and strength of patients when their own fail". He also commented that the profession is increasingly valued by society, but that there is still "a lot of work for it to become what it should be, and this work begins with every one of us making a commitment". In this sense, he encouraged new graduates to lead this change.

As new nursing professionals, the speaker reminded them that "you must take care of people, but also give them something more: teach them about health so that they demand the best healthcare system, the best resources and the best conditions to achieve a sustainable, healthy and fairer world".

Fernández also talked about the University. "I am sure that your lecturers have transmitted values to you: a passion for hard work, rigour and science. I ask that you bring this passion to your work on a daily basis, put passion into everything you do". And finally, he emphasised that they should always come back to the University: "do not forget that UIC Barcelona opened the way to a better future for you".

After his speech, the graduation diplomas were given out and the representatives of both courses gave speeches. The ceremony was closed by the vice-rector of the University Community, Belén Zárate, who congratulated the new graduates and thanked them for their confidence in UIC Barcelona for these years of training. The event ended with the traditional university anthem, Gaudeamus Igitur.
