Laura Ferrero, writer: “Real failure is continuing in a life you don’t want”

The writer gives a talk on the literary representation of the sense of personal failure in the context of her story “Take Care of Yourself [Cuídate]”, from the book Empty Pools [Piscinas vacias]

On 9 November, writer, screenwriter and journalist Laura Ferrero (Barcelona, 1984) participated in a meeting with students of the Faculty of Humanities who are taking the subject Comparative Literature, taught by Dr Teresa Vallès.

The conversation addressed the literary representation of the sense of personal failure, which Ferrero discusses in stories such as “Cuídate” (Piscinas vacias, Alfaguara, 2021). “Failing is not falling in love with another person and making a lifestyle change. Real failure is continuing in a life that you don't want,” the writer said referring to the story she explains in her narrative.

In a discussion-type session with the students, Ferrero argued that literature allows us to reflect on the social stereotypes of success or failure. about the feeling of guilt and the need to understand one’s own past and also about the story that each person builds over their lifetime. “In life, we look to justify everything we do, to create a coherent narrative, just as writers do, when in reality, things are often done without wondering whether they make sense, if they can be justified. That comes later, when you have to explain your story,” Ferrero said.
