Lecturer Josep Serrano Daura gives a lecture about the history of law at the University of Valencia
Lecturer Josep Serrano Daura, from UIC Barcelona History of Law and Institutions, gave a lecture about civil law in the territories of the Kingdom of Aragon on Monday, 9 May, at the Faculty of Law of the University of Valencia. The lecture was part of a public event, but aimed especially at students of the history of law
In his lecture, Serrano explained the vagaries of Catalan, Aragonese, Valencian and Mallorcan law and institutions after these territories lost to the the forces of Felipe de Anjou in the War of Succession for the Spanish Crown between 1707 and 1714.
The lecturer analysed how the territories were reorganised after the war and how their laws and rights were affected: Valencia lost everything (1707); Aragon retained civil law (1711); and Catalonia and Mallorca maintained civil, commercial, criminal and procedural law (1715 and 1716).
Serrano, doctor of law and lecturer at the Faculty of Law of UIC Barcelona, is the author of several books including Historia del derecho catalán, El territorio y sus instituciones históricas and Señorío y municipio en la Cataluña nueva (siglos XII-XIX).
