Lecturer Ricardo Jiménez publishes a book analysing the Spanish press’ coverage of three news stories on religion

The essay by the lecturer from the UIC Barcelona Faculty of Humanities and Faculty of Law is titled Con la religión hemos dado, Sancho. Framing de la religión en editoriales de prensa de cuatro periódicos españoles

The lecturer from the Faculty of Humanities and Faculty of Law at UIC Barcelona, Ricardo Jiménez, has published Con la religión hemos dado, Sancho. Framing de la religión en editoriales de prensa de cuatro periódicos españoles, (It's religion we have lit upon, Sancho. A framing analysis of the coverage of religion in press articles from four Spanish newspapers’). The book analyses how four Spanish newspapers represented three controversial news reports on the subject of religion. Dr Jiménez has systematically analysed articles from four newspapers published at the time of the school headscarf ban, Pope Benedict XVI's trip to the UK and the passing of the abortion law in 2009.

The essay, published by Fragua, studies articles published between 2009 and 2010 from the newspapers El País, ABC, La Vanguardia and El Periódico. It uses an innovative methodology, ‘framing analysis’, more typical of the field of communication, combined with an analysis of the discourse and corpus linguistics.

"I hope this book helps people become more aware of how the media discourse in Spain approaches the topic of religion", explains the professor, who adds that it can be used "by public discourse researchers, communication professionals and also by spokespeople of different religious groups".

La Voz de Galicia journalist Paco Sánchez wrote the prologue to the book. The research in this essay forms part of the research project "El DEMOS en el imaginario de la nueva política”, funded by MINECO (FF12015-65252-R).
