Lecturers Alberto T. Estevez and Affonso Orciuoli take the latest digital techniques to the National Congress of Architecture 4.0 and Advanced Construction at REBUILD

The event, which took place at the CCIB and gathered over 9,000 business owners and professionals, analysed the latest technologies and cutting-edge construction systems

UIC Barcelona School of Architecture lecturers Alberto T. Estévez and Affonso Orciuoli recently took part as speakers in the first National Congress of Architecture 4.0 and Advanced Construction –held as part of the REBUILD expo–, which took place at the Barcelona International Convention Centre (CCIB) between 26 and 28 of September.

On 27 September, Lecturer Affonso Orciuoli gave a talk entitled “Wood frame eco-house”, in which he described a sustainable housing project which used certified wood and was designed entirely through the process of Building Information Modelling (BIM), a range of software that makes it possible to control every aspect of the construction process.

The next day, he gave another presentation entitled “3D Building Printing”, which addressed the state-of-the-art use of 3D printers for construction purposes in the field of Architecture. According to the lecturer, “this is one of the most important technological breakthroughs and is revolutionising the industry, because it helps minimise construction systems through prefabricated homes and subsequent on-site assembly, which drastically reduces material waste”.

Also on 28 September, Professor Alberto T. Estévez delivered a talk entitled “Future is bio-manufacturing (Architecture & Design)”, in which he discussed the notion of bio-manufacturing: “It is a concept that applies to the construction of future cities, which will be 50% biological and 50% digital”, explained Estévez. “In the same way in which digital manufacturing harnesses the immense potential that the new digital techniques hold for Architecture, bio-manufacturing is based on the progress made by techniques from the biological realm, through the application of genetics to the field of Architecture”.

The REBUILD expo, held for the third time in Barcelona, is a pioneering event in the construction and restoration sector where professionals can discover the latest innovations in a specialised environment, and which is firmly committed to digitalisation and construction 4.0. In addition to the lecturers, the Congress also featured presentations by UIC Barcelona School of Architecture alumni Santiago Cirugeda and Mauro Costa.
