Lecturers Torres and Escribano take part in an international congress on the Philosophy of Pain

The event took place in Salamanca from 2-4 May.

Lecturers Bernat Torres and Francisco Xavier Escribano recently participated in the international congress Philosophy of Pain, which was held from 2-4 May in Salamanca.

Torres took part in the congress with a presentation entitled "Paradoxes of Pain: A Dialogue Between Plato and Contemporary Phenomenology". In his talk, the lecturer from the Faculty of Humanities outlined several paradoxes of pain present in contemporary phenomenology and ancient thought, referring primarily to the work of Plato.

He also analysed “how the paradox of pain is associated with representational content, like a feeling, and how it can be both a destructive and constructive experience”.

Elsewhere, lecturer Escribano took part in the congress with a talk entitled “El dolor en escena. Fenomenología del dolor ajeno y su expresión dramática” [Pain in Scene: The Phenomenology of Other People’s Pain and its Dramatic Expression]. According to the lecturer from the Faculty of Humanities, the aim of his talk was to show “how different dramatic depictions of pain in the world of theatre can help shed light on the complex phenomenon of the expression and recognition of other people’s pain”.
