Leopoldo Abadía: “Sometimes it is the duty of the artist to discover how much music they can create with what they have.”

The well-known “Viajero Ninja” (Ninja Traveller) was the patron of the first graduation of the Senior University Graduate Programme in Culture, Science and Society, of the Experience Campus. A total of forty students received their sashes at an event that took place in the Aula Magna of UIC Barcelona. Over a hundred students from different courses of the Campus also collected their diploma.

It was a party. Over a hundred students who have passed through the Experience Campus were accompanied by their teachers, family and friends. “Today a dream is fulfilled,” said Jordi Miralbell, director of the Experience Campus in his speech, “a dream in which for the first time senior students graduate at this university”.

Economist and writer Leopoldo Abadía, well-known as the “Viajero Ninja” was patron of the graduation. Abadía, who inaugurated the first courses of this senior programme in 2019, spoke about the concept of death in his speech. He told the story about an older Israeli violinist playing at the Lincoln Center in New York, when one of the strings of his instrument broke. Faced with the dilemma of what to do, in the end he decided to continue playing. “Sometimes it is the duty of the artist to discover how much music they can create with what they have.”

What is expected of people 50 years and older? Abadía asked: “It is normal to discover you are older one day, but our conversations cannot simply be about how worse off we are now.”

After the class representative spoke, Alfonso Méndez, rector of UIC Barcelona, gave the closing address and, like Leopold Abadía, encouraged graduates not to stop despite their age.

The event ended with a performance of the Experience Campus Choir.
