Marta Segura, Helena Roquet, Noelia Navarro and Júlia Barón win first prize in their category at the 2020 John McDowell Awards, funded by the British Council

The Association of English Teachers in Catalonia (APAC), organisers of the John McDowell Awards, recently awarded a project undertaken by three members of the Department of Applied Linguistics at UIC Barcelona

The “Learning English in Pre-Primary Education” project led by Marta Segura, Helena Roquet and Noelia Navarro from the University’s Department of Applied Linguistics, along with Júlia Barón from the University of Barcelona, won first prize in their category as part of the 2020 John McDowell Awards, funded by the British Council.

This project, which was undertaken at Mare de Déu School in Montserrat (Rubí) and at Mare de Déu School in La Salut (Sabadell), looks at how to promote English language learning in pre-primary education. To obtain results, the theoretical part of the project was implemented in children's classes from Spanish P3 to P5 and support was provided by teachers and tutors from the schools.

This project, winner of this year's edition in its category, was awarded €1.200, which will be passed on to the two schools where the data was collected so that the study can be implemented in their classrooms.

The APAC – John McDowell Awards are organised annually by the Association of English Teachers in Catalonia and aim to recognise efforts made by both teachers and students in their work undertaken in English. The awards aim to promote research and pedagogical innovation among teachers and provide recognition for classroom activities carried out by students.
