The Master's Degree in Periodontics at UIC Barcelona, Europe's only private EFP-accredited programme

The Master's Degree in Periodontics at UIC Barcelona recently became accredited by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP), making it the first private university and the fourteenth worldwide to receive this accreditation. The accreditation process, which began in 2013, concluded with an on-site visit by a three-person panel made up of Dr Moshe Goldstein, Director of the Master's Degree in Periodontics at Hadassah-Hebrew University, Dr Philipe Bouxard, Director of the Master's Degree in Periodontics at Paris Diderot University-Paris 7 and Dr David Herrera, Lecturer in Periodontics at Complutense University of Madrid, the other Spanish university to have earned this accreditation.

This accreditation, which is granted for a period of eight years, endorses certain standards of quality as regards teaching staff, clinic, curriculum and programme management. The evaluation committee interviewed six programme lecturers, three former students, 3 current students from all three years, the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at UIC Barcelona, several division managers and the Director of the University Clinic. With this accreditation, the students, after the three-year master's programme, will be considered European Board Certified Periodontists and specialists in periodontics and implants in all countries in which periodontics is a nationally recognised specialism. The programme has also gained a place in the workshops convened by the Federation and in its magazine, the Journal of Clinical Periodontology.

Other universities with this accreditation include Catholic University of Leuven, University of Strasbourg, Paris Diderot University-Paris 7, University of Dublin, Hadassah-Hebrew University, University of Bern and University College London. According to José Nart, the programme director, this accreditation "implies that the university, its lecturers and its students have the highest standards of clinical, academic and research accreditation in the field of periodontics and implants."
