Member of Parliament Carles Campuzano Gives Talk at UIC on Pension System Reforms

On Wednesday, 2 October 2013, Carles Campuzano, the Member of Parliament for the political party CiU at the Congress of Deputies, gave a lecture entitled ?Pension System Reform: Balance and Perspectives?. It formed part of the cycle of continuing-education conferences that are given throughout the academic year at the Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences.

Analysed the latest reforms that have been carried out. He defended the collective system, because – in his words - “it has a communal impact”.

Campuzano went on to highlight two positives of the reforms that were carried out two years ago: one, that they have “protected senior citizens during the economic crisis”; and two, that currently “the social-security reserves are being used to pay this year’s and next year’s pensions”. He emphasized that this was not possible in the previous recession, as “this reserve did not exist, and so the deficit was increased in order to pay for the pensions”.

Lastly, Campuzano drew the audience’s attention to two current points of debate concerning the pension system: namely, weighting pension payments on the basis of changes to life expectancy, and altering the update system so that it is no longer pegged to the CPI.
