Monforte Analyses Nursing Care at Faith and Reason Meeting

Dr. Cristina Monforte, the Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and Director of the Nursing Department, gave the lecture «21st-Century Care: Challenges and Reality» at the Meeting of Faith and Reason, which was jointly organized by the UIC and the Pontificia Università della Santa Croce and held on Thursday and Friday, 26-27 September 2013, at the UIC.

In her paper, Monforte stated, "Nursing is linked to care as an essential part of the profession". She analysed what “care” means in nursing besides applying medical treatments. She specifically focused on the major role that nurses play with patients who are close to death and how nurses are affected by these patients.

Dr. Monforte said that the current challenge for nursing is “to find meaning in what we do, in the care given to patients who suffer (with the understanding that pain is not just physical, but can be mental, emotional, spiritual and even existential), in the care given to end-of-life patients, in fatal diagnoses for young patients, in the death of children, in situations in which providing care involves reduced dignity for patients, etc.”

The two-day meeting was organized by the UIC and the Pontificia Università della Santa Croce (PUSC), and gave UIC professors and the theologians Paul O’Callaghan and Lluís Clavell, who teach at the PUSC, the opportunity to exchange ideas and delve into knowledge of light and faith and respond to the challenges arising in different professional areas.

The first day of the programme was held on the Barcelona campus and the second was held on the Sant Cugat campus. On both days, UIC professors and the two PUSC professors discussed topics related to faith and reason from the perspective of their respective disciplines. After all the papers were read, a debate was opened with the guest speakers in an attempt to shed light on the ideas raised.

The Meeting of Faith and Reason was one of the events organized by the UIC as part of the Year of Faith declared by Pope Benedict XVI.
