Navarro Participates in Conference Celebrating 100th Anniversary of Cantabrian Institute of Pharmacists

Dolors Navarro, the Vice President of the Spanish Patients' Forum and Head of Epidemiology and Health at the UIC Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, participated in the conference «Patients: The Centre of a Pharmacist's Profession», which took place at the Cantabrian Parliament to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Official Cantabrian Institute of Pharmacists.

María José Sáenz de Buruaga, the Cantabrian Minister of Health, and Marta Fernández Teijeiro, the President of the Official Cantabrian Institute of Pharmacists also participated in the event, which was presided over by José Antonio Cagigas, the President of the Parliament.

Besides supporting the current Spanish model of pharmaceutical services, Sáenz de Buruaga also discussed the professional contribution pharmacists have made to the care of chronic patients on several medications. This contribution was made possible by a development programme designed to improve the quality of life of the elderly population. The programme combines the activities of professionals in the Cantabrian Health Services and pharmacies.

Dr. Navarro said that pharmacists should be able to provide tangible answers to the needs and expectations of their patients. "People are well-informed, they have a higher level of education and greater access to information", she said.

Cagigas also discussed the close relationship between customers and pharmacists, who make treatment easier for customers to understand. "We have one of the best systems of pharmaceutical services in the world and a high level of professional excellence in the field", stressed the President of the Parliament.
