New edition of the Vertical Workshop, a commitment to society and the city

Registration is open for the new edition of the Vertical Workshop which will take place at the beginning of September and which marks the beginning of the 2016-2017 academic year at the UIC Barcelona School of Architecture. The Vertical Workshop in the School of Architecture brings together students from first through to fifth year who are mixed up into different teams, each led by a couple of renowned young national architects, who all together create a real architecture project based on social aims. It takes place over approximately ten days.

Entitled Doggy Bag: the Public Domain and the reuse of discarded resources, this year’s Vertical Workshop will be based on the idea of giving a second chance to furniture and other discarded items. The aim is to raise awareness about reusing objects and the primary material these are made of. The designed elements produced by the various teams will be exhibited on the street, occupying public space, in agreement with Barcelona City Council and the Barcelona Agency for Urban Ecology, as part of the superblock plan for the Eixample area. The pieces produced by students will later be given to groups and associations that have a social vocation.

The Vertical Workshop will be held between 5 and 13 September with prior registration, and is open to students from the School of Architecture, architecture students from other universities, and upper-secondary school students who would like to have some real experience of this degree programme. The school offers 5 free places to upper-secondary school students who would like to participate in this new edition.
