Nursing students discuss the care of older people in emergency services
They discussion took place during the Interdisciplinary Approach to the Elderly Seminar, which celebrated its 10th edition this year and was led by different experts in the field of health and with the aim of responding to the challenges posed by the care of the elderly in emergency services
Thursday, 2 November, the Sant Cugat Campus hosted the 10th Interdisciplinary Approach to the Elderly Seminar, under the title “Caring for the elderly person in emergency services.” Organised by the fourth-year Nursing degree students, the Seminar brought together various experts in the area who shared their experiences with future nursing professionals.
Júlia Palau, chair of the Organising Committee, Pilar Fuster, assistant director of the UIC Barcelona Department of Nursing, and Bia Canut, president of the Scientific Committee were in charge of opening the seminar and welcoming the attendees.
Subsequently, a panel discussion moderated by student Mercè Fabrega took place. Experts participating in the panel on the seminar theme were Isabel Anglès, medical emergency team (SEM) nurse and emergency psychologist; Daniel Arbonés, nurse at CUAP Sant Pere de Ribes; and Laura Brichs, nurse in Emergency Services at the Hospital Comarcal de la Selva. The speakers presented the challenges faced in caring for the elderly and their families in emergency services in different contexts: hospital, home and primary care. The panellists concluded the discussion with the presentation of cases and answering the questions from the attendees.
Later, fourth-year Nursing degree students made their presentations in the form of oral communication and poster format, moderated by Marina Podadera and Judit Sanz, respectively. The papers presented dealt with the care of older people in emergency situations from different perspectives through the analysis of testimonies, review of the literature and analysis of perceptions based on surveys. Next, Bia Canut, Scientific Committee president, read the conclusions drawn from the seminar, which led to the awards ceremony. The award for best communication was given to Maria Lluïsa Farré, Raquel Sánchez and Mercè Fabrega, for their paper "Perceptions of nurses on barriers and facilitators for humanising care of elderly people in emergency services: A cross-disciplinary descriptive pilot study." The award for best poster was given to Maria Par, Irati Narbonne and Júlia Palau, for their work "Prevention of bronchoaspiration in emergency services."
Lastly, Silvia Pilar, Intensive Care Unit nursing supervisor at the General University Hospital of Catalonia, delivered the closing speech, and Júlia Palau, Organising Committee president, thanked the attendees and experts for their participation before closing the seminar.
