One of our lecturers from the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Anna Surinyach, receives an award at the IV Edition of the Enfoque Awards

Anna Surinyach, a Photojournalism lecturer in the Faculty of Communication Sciences at UIC Barcelona, was one of the three winners in the category of “female photojournalist” at the fourth edition of the Enfoque Awards entitled “A critical perspective of journalism”. The awards were given out on 26 April, in a ceremony that took place in the Fine Arts Circle in Madrid.

Freelance photojournalists Maysun and Cristina García Rodero also received awards. During the ceremony, the Lupa del Público award was also given out, an award chosen by the audience in each of the categories. Maysun took the award in the category of “female photojournalist”.

This edition was the first year that photojournalism has been included. According to Surinyach this is significant “because photojournalism must have the recognition it deserves both in the media in our country, as well as in the faculties in which these studies take place”.

The results of the Enfoque Awards depend on votes from the audience, and for that reason, explains Surinyach “it means a lot to win one, since you realise that your work has had an impact on the audience”. “For me - she continued -photography is a tool which allows me to interpret and explain the world”.

With more than 11,000 participants this year, these awards are based on recognising good work but also work that does not respect human rights and the social function of journalism, by awarding a “focused” and an “unfocused” award respectively. The purpose of these awards is to demonstrate both advisable and unadvisable journalistic activities, in order to award good work and at the same time draw attention to bad practice in this profession.
