Over 100 Secondary School Students Attend Philosophy Seminar Lectures
Since September, the Faculty of Humanities has organized the philosophy seminar consisting of a monthly lecture for secondary school students. To date, nearly 200 future university students have attended the lectures.
On Thursday, 27 November 2014, Prof. Miriam Vidal-Quadras gave the November lecture in the philosophy seminar. With the title Aristotle and the Admiration of Reality, Prof. Vidal Quadras spoke about Metaphysics, which, she said, “is one of the philosopher's most important works and the one in which he stated that all men by nature desire to know”.
The lecturer then spoke about what Aristotle considered to be the highest form knowledge, i.e. wisdom or philosophy, because it provides answers to the basic questions of human existence. Vidal-Quadras went on to say, "Only someone with the power of admiration can be surprised by the mystery of everyday things and can discover all that is hidden by reality".
In the October session, Prof. Bernat Torres spoke about education in Plato's teachings through the presentation of different texts taken from Plato's most representative works, such as The Republic and Timaeus.
The monthly lectures will be held until April 2015 and the April lecture will be given by Magdalena Bosch, the seminar organizer. The subjects of the different lectures will include philosophers such as Descartes and Nietzsche and topics such as ethics and utilitarianism.
