Portuguese Architect Campos Costa Speaks on the Use of Ceramics in Architecture

On Tuesday, 16 October 2012, Pedro Campos Costa, who was born in Lisbon in 1972 and is considered one of the best young architects in Portugal, gave a lecture at the ESARQ Ceramic Studies Department. The lecture was one of a group of talks given by guest architects from all over the world and organized by the Ceramic Studies Department.

Campos spoke about the use of ceramics in the expansion of
the Lisbon Oceanarium, whose façade was designed to imitate fish scales using
more than 7000 pieces of ceramic produced using artisan techniques by Catalan
ceramist Toni Cumella.

The new edition of the ESARQ Ceramic Studies Department,
which is sponsored by ASCER, is called “Patios and Ceramics”. In this edition
of the course, which will last the entire term, the use of traditional ceramics
in Mediterranean patios will be revisited by giving the ceramics contemporary
features, such as light and climate control. The course already welcomed a
guest speaker from the Catalan firm Flores & Prats Arquitectos. Another activity will involve a visit
to the Cerámicas Brancós plant in La Bisbal
d’Empordà,
and a visit to Toni Cumella's workshop (Ceràmica Cumella). Technical explanations will also be
provided by the company Alicer + ITC.

On the last day of the course at the end of the term, the
ESARQ Ceramic Studies Department team will present the book Materiales Cerámicos 8 (Ceramic Materials 8), which includes the projects made in
the department's previous edition. The projects done during the term will be
presented on the last day of the term and a guest jury will assess them and
decide on the winner of this year's edition. The jury will be made up of Bet Capdeferro and
Ramon Bosch
from Bosch Capdeferro Arquitectes; Tomeu Ramis and Aixa del Rey from Flexo Arquitectura; and Ana Martínez, the Director of Communication at
ASCER.
