Presentation of the First Annual UNIRUN, the University Race

On Sunday, 8 March 2015, the cities of Barcelona and Sant Adrià de Besòs will take part in the first-ever UNIRUN, the University Race. The event is being promoted by the twelve universities in the Catalan University Sports Association (ECU), with the support of Barcelona City Council, Catalonia's General Secretariat for Sport and Sant Adrià de Besòs City Council. Gaudium Sports is managing the event.

 

The UNIRUN was unveiled on Wednesday, 25 February, 2015 in the old brewery of Estrella Damm, a sponsor of the event. The event was presided over by Alberto Maria Canals, the General Manager of the UIC, Gabi Arranz, the Director of Sports Promotion and Events at the Barcelona Sports Institute, and Oriol Marcé, the Assistant Director General of Sports Activities and Infrastructure at the Catalan Sports Council. Representatives from the twelve participating universities were also present. The unveiling included the presentation of the official event T-shirts bearing the colours and logos of the participating universities: UB, UAB, UPC, UdL, UdG, URV, URL, UOC, UVIC, UAO and UIC.

All participants must wear the technical T-shirt for the university they represent, as provided by the organizers at the Runner’s Fair, which will be held on Saturday, 7 March 2015, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the FIATC Insurance headquarters, Avinguda Diagonal 648.

The UNIRUN will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Passeig Garcia Fària, in Barcelona’s Sant Martí district. The course consists of a 6,779-metre circuit, exactly the same distance as the classic Oxford-Cambridge regatta.

Participation is open to everyone, including university students, alumni, prospective students, members of the teaching staff, employees, suppliers, family members and supporters of any of the Catalan universities.

The UNIRUN also collaborated with the 2014 TV3 Marathon, in solidarity with those suffering from heart disease.
