Professor Anna Petrus, honourable mention in the 2020 Julio Alejandro SGAE Screenplay Awards

Petrus’ first feature-length fiction script, Ulls de gat (Cat eyes), was selected as a finalist in the competition from some 263 pieces submitted.

Anna Petrus, lecturer at the Faculty of Communication Sciences, has received an honourable mention in the 2020 Julio Alejandro SGAE Screenplay Award for Ulls de gat, her first feature-length fiction script. The text explores the impact childhood wounds can have on adulthood through the story of a pregnant dancer and her relationship with cats.

“I felt like I needed to tell a story that would break with current audiovisual stereotypes and shine a spotlight on all the types of violence inflicted on women's bodies”, explained Petrus, who will also make her directorial debut when the script is brought to the big screen. “Optimism and faith in people’s capacity for resilience and healing is one of the other major themes of the film”, she added.

The Julio Alejandro SGAE Screenplay Award was created in honour of, and named after, the scriptwriter of the film Viridiana, directed by Luis Buñuel, and this year accepted 263 entries from Spain and Latin America.
