Professor Collantes Gives Talk on Assange and Possible Extradition

On Tuesday, 18 September 2012, Jorge Luis Collantes, a professor of International Law at the UIC, gave a talk on the Assange case at the Bar Association of Barcelona (ICAB). Further to the conference, Collantes has published an article in «Diario Jurídico» in which he analyses the possible extradition of the founder of Wikileaks.

According to Professor Collantes, ever since
Julian Assange was granted asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in the United Kingdom,
"whether or not he is guilty of the charges against him has become of
secondary interest to journalists".

In the public arena his extradition case is
getting most of the attention. His extradition comes under the European arrest warrant,
a simplified detention and transfer system among all Member States of the
European Union. “Weeks after Ecuador
granted him asylum", said Collantes, "public curiosity and predictions about
possible outcomes" have become commonplace. Collantes said that the situation could be summed up in the question posed by the
spokesperson for the British Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who wondered,
"Can the law of one state or government order forced entry into an
embassy?"

In his article, Jorge Luis Collantes analyses the different issues the Assange case raises
and the problems such a complicated case poses for the law.
