Professor Hernández Alfaro Receives Simo Virgilio Award

Federico Hernández Alfaro, the Head of the Department of Surgery in the Faculty of Dentistry, received the Simo Virgilio Award from the Academy of Health and Medical Sciences of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands for the best article published in 2012.

The article “Endoscopically Assisted Tunnel Approach for Minimally Invasive Corticotomies: A Preliminary Report” was published in the Journal of Periodontology. “This award is in recognition of the research we have done in the last few years”, said Prof. Hernández Alfaro.

As the UIC professor explained, the article is the proof of concept of a technique designed to perform minimally invasive corticotomies. “Corticotomies are very useful for speeding up orthodontic treatment, but the problem is that the techniques that have been used thus far are aggressive and postoperative treatment is complicated. With our technique, by making small incisions in the gum, we can reach the bone and make cuts using a range of ultrasounds. These cuts allow for greater movement”, he explained.

The Simo Virgilio Award is given once a year to the best scientific publication of the previous year. There is just one winner and no finalists.
