Professor Jorge Carreras Llansana, Member of the Academic and Social Council, Dies

Dr. Jorge Carreras Llansana died at the age of 86 on Thursday, 3 May 2012, in Sant Cugat del Vallès. He was a member of the UIC Academic and Social Council and was awarded an honorary degree by the Universidad de Navarra in 1994.

Born
in Barcelona in 1925, Carreras Llansana graduated with a law degree in Barcelona in 1948 and
went on to receive a doctoral degree in law from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 1951. He was
made head of the Procedural Law Department at the Universidad de Granada in
1958 and in 1961 became part of the teaching staff at the Universidad de
Navarra, where he undertook teaching and research activities in addition to
becoming Vice Dean and Dean of the Faculty of Law. In 1973, he was named Rector
of the Universitat de Barcelona, a position he held
for one year.

Carreras Llansana engaged in
intense teaching and research activities and wrote several books and scientific
research papers on procedural law and international private procedural law. He
was also a permanent member of the General Codification Commission and the
commission that drafted the bill of the Spanish Insolvency Act, among other
texts.

As
well as the honorary degree he received in 1994, Carreras Llansana was
awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Alfonso X the Wise, the Commander by
Number of the Order of Civil Merit and the Honour Cross of the Order of Saint
Raymond of Peñafort.
