Professor of Medicine Marcel Prats Publishes Novel

Professor Marcel Prats from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences recently introduced his novel Tinc el 78! (I have number 78!) at the Barcelona Medical Association. In the novel, Prats tells a story that will resonate with readers and remind them of situations and anecdotes from their own lives.

Tinc el 78! tells the story of Maurineta, a woman in the present day from the La Maurina, a neighbourhood in the Catalan city of Terrassa. In the form of a personal diary, the novel provides a touching, committed vision of the Catalan primary care system. Maurineta talks about her personal and family life, the history of the neighbourhood’s residents, the conditions at the old outpatient clinic and the opening of the new primary care centre.

The story describes the work of three of the neighbourhood’s top doctors and provides a chance to learn about the professional vicissitudes that came with the transition from outpatient clinics to primary care centres, as well as some clues to what the future will hold for the healthcare industry, given that Maurineta was born in 1978 and will live until 2047.

The apparently arbitrary number 78 takes on symbolic meaning in the novel. It reminds the reader that life, which is supposedly linear, is actually circular and that everything is connected: the past, present and future.
