Professor Mercè Miralles Receives Award from Barcelona City Council

Mercè Miralles, an assistant professor in the UIC Faculty of Communication Sciences, has won the Municipal Social Welfare Council Media Award for her articles ?Avis maltractats? (Abused Grandparents) and ?Desnonats? (Evicted), which were published in the newspaper supplement Presència.

The
awards, which were created to recognize and promote social, civic, responsible
and committed journalism, were presented in Barcelona City Hall’s “Saló de Cent” on Wednesday, 16 January 2013, at
an event chaired by Maite Fandos, the Deputy Mayor
for Quality of Life, Equality and Sports at Barcelona City Council.

The
judging panel, which was made up of representatives from journalism and the social
sector, awarded the article “Avis maltractats” for “its sensitivity”, as well as “the
research carried out, the personal
experiences and the emphasis on prevention”. With reference to the article “Desnonats. El drama de quedar-se sense habitatge i sense
res” (Evicted: The Tragedy of Losing One's Home and Being Left with
Nothing), the judging panel highlighted “the author's foresight and the rigour
with which she demonstrated the diverse viewpoints of the different areas and
parties involved”.

The
remaining awards went to the website of the Real Dreams Foundation, the L’hora L programme on radio station Cadena SER,
and the documentary Shaïma, Tànger on Catalan television channel TV3.
