Professors Miguel Peñarrocha and Amparo Aloy Bring Their Experience to International Master’s Degree Programme in Oral Surgery

Dr. Miguel Peñarrocha, who is the Professor of Oral Surgery and Director of the Department of Dentistry (Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry) at the Universitat de València, and Dr. Amparo Aloy, an Assistant Professor on the Master’s Degree Programme in Oral Surgery at the same university, each gave a talk to students on the UIC’s International Master’s Degree Programme in Oral Surgery

Professor Peñarrocha's talk, “Major Atrophies in the Upper Maxilla”, discussed the various kinds of surgical and prosthodontic treatment that are available for this type of major bone defect. His proposal focused on the use of buttress-type implants that would make use of the patient's remaining bone area, thereby preventing the need for major reconstructive surgery. In Dr. Peñarrocha’s opinion, the use of zygomatic, pteryogoid or palate implants is a highly effective alternative that would reduce morbidity as well as oral rehabilitation time in patients suffering from this type of problem.

In her talk, Dr. Aloy presented scientific evidence to support the use of block grafts of autologous bone in patients suffering from atrophy. She provided a step-by-step update of the current state of bone regeneration by means of autologous bone grafts, looking at surgical techniques and choice of donor area, before giving a clear description of the requirements and outcomes for this kind of treatment.
