A research project by UIC Barcelona on educational innovation in basic life support training receives first prize from the Academy of Medical Sciences and Health for Catalonia and the Balearic Islands

The award recognises the project, carried out jointly by researchers from the University's nursing and dentistry departments

The Academy of Medical Sciences and Health for Catalonia and the Balearic Islands and the Catalan Resuscitation Council awarded the “Estudio experimental aleatorizado de innovación docente que compara metodología mixta frente a presencial para la formación en soporte vital básico estándar del European Resuscitation Council” project with  the prize for Best Publication in a Scientific Journal 2021.

The study, with Dr Jordi Castillo as first author and Dr Encarna Rodríguez as principal investigator, both researchers from the Nursing Department at UIC Barcelona, also included the participation of Dr. Elvira Ferrés, from the Faculty of Dentistry. In the award-winning project, the researchers evaluated the results of blended versus face-to-face learning in a basic life support/automated external defibrillator course, as well as their retention at 9 months. “The results show that the virtual methodology produces better results in some skill parameters,” the researchers said.

More and more degree programmes taught on our UIC Barcelona Sant Cugat Campus train students in resuscitation and first aid, meaning they then obtain double degrees (both national and European) in Basic Life Support and the use of automated external defibrillators thus creating a cardioprotected university. “Nursing, Medicine, Education, Psychology, Dentistry, Biomedical Sciences and Bioengineering students carry out this training during the academic year and next year Physiotherapy students will join them” explained Dr Jordi Castillo.

The study forms part of the research lines in the Research Group in Health Education at UIC Barcelona, led by Dr Albert Gallart, a group that includes teachers and researchers from different fields such as medicine, nursing and dentistry.
