The lecturer from the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Law has written a chapter in the new book edited by Carmen Llamas and Ruth Breeze called Metaphor in political conflict. Populism and discourse, which analyses the role of metaphors in political discourse.

Jiménez-Yáñez, who wrote the chapter alongside Dr Ruth Breeze, analyses metaphor scenarios depicted by editorial journalistic discourse during the first few days of October 2017 in Catalonia, set within the context of the declaration of independence.  Fruit of an exhaustive qualitative analysis, the lecturer analyses the network of metaphor scenarios used by newspapers such as La Vanguardia, El Periódico, El País and El Mundo in their editorials.

The chapter explains how the country’s main headlines offered a negative representation of the struggle, employing different metaphors that depicted the dispute as a war, a dangerous atmospheric phenomenon or a blaze.  On the other hand, the chapter also explores how only a handful of metaphors employed by journalists painted the situation in a positive light.
