Ricardo María Jiménez Completes Research Fellowship at Institute for Culture and Society

Ricardo María Jiménez, a professor in the Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences, carried out a research fellowship at the Universidad de Navarra's Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) in August 2013.

Jiménez’s fellowship was part of the “Public Discourse” project directed by Dr. Manuel Casado. The professor used a comprehensive methodology for discourse analysis with an interdisciplinary perspective (corpus linguistics, rhetoric and frame analysis) to research the presence of religion in the public sphere in the editorials of four newspapers — El País, El Mundo, La Vanguardia and El Periódico de Catalunya — during 2009 and 2010.  The corpus contained 1,500,000 tokens (words).

The research project led by Casado aims to identify a catalogue of procedures for the construction (and interpretation) of textual meaning. It also seeks to test the viability and effectiveness of this methodology in the analysis of publicly relevant discourse (in the media, in this case) on issues related to the ICS’s priority lines of research.

The Institute for Culture and Society at the Universidad de Navarra promotes genuine dialogue in search of scientific answers, practical ideas and innovative proposals that can help address the major challenges in today’s society, through the development of rigorous research projects in the sphere of the Humanities and Social Sciences.
