Sarx Research Group Organizes Third International Seminar on the Anthropology of Corporality

On Thursday, 18 June 2015, the UIC Barcelona Faculty of Humanities hosted the third International Seminar on the Anthropology of Corporality. The slogan for this edition of the seminar, which is organized by Sarx (a research group on the anthropology of corporality coordinated by the faculty), was “Our Feet on the Ground: Walking, Running and Dancing”.

The lectures were given by specialists from different fields such as anatomy, philosophy, classical literature, education, art, architecture and theology. The seminar reflected on human nature based on the multiple layers of meaning that are found in bipedalism and our body’s upright posture and that have been expressed in various forms throughout history.

One idea that emerged was that in today’s increasingly technological society, we’re walking less and less, and walking could end up becoming a recreational activity.

Sarx coordinator Xavier Escribano said, “Walking opens a window to the world. It lets us discover it gradually and gain new perspectives and visions of our planet”. In other words, walking helps us learn. In fact, intellectuals like Rousseau, Goethe and Von Humboldt turned their walks and journeys around the world into fundamental experiences for learning and obtaining inspiration.
