Sellas Issues CAC Report on Facebook and Twitter in Catalan Radio

Dr. Toni Sellas, a professor in the Faculty of Communications Sciences, has issued a report to the Catalonia Broadcasting Council (CAC). The report stems from a research project on how Facebook and Twitter are used by general-interest radio stations in Catalonia.

The report,
"Radio in Social Networks", is based on the project "Radio in
Social Networks: Analysis of How Facebook and Twitter Are Used by
General-interest Radio Stations". Dr. Toni Sellas was head researcher on
the project.

The research is
an in-depth study into how the media uses social networks. In over 150 pages,
Sellas deals with how the four Catalan general-interest stations (Catalunya Ràdio, RAC1, COM Ràdio y Ràdio 4) use Facebook
and Twitter, the two main social networks. The study is based on extensive
content analysis as well as a series of in-depth interviews. The analysis is
based on a sample of 421 Facebook messages, 2,406 Facebook comments and 1,112
Tweets.

The report
reveals how and why radio stations work as they do with social networks. It
shows the structural challenges that the media faces as its presence in this
new context grows. These radio stations are encouraged to try to include social
networks in their daily production routines, while simultaneously developing a
new culture that will allow them to adapt to the specific dynamics of these
platforms.

The project
"Radio in Social Networks: Analysis of How Facebook and Twitter Are Used by
General-interest Radio Stations" is one of six Catalan research projects
funded by the CAC in the 8th Edition of Research Grants by the Catalonia
Broadcasting Council.
