Sílvia Albareda Presents Book on Planetary Sustainable Development

On Tuesday, 14 April 2015, Sílvia Albareda, a lecturer at the UIC’s Faculty of Education, launched her book Reconciliarse con el planeta (Reconciling with the Planet), which seeks “to reflect on our personal relationship with everything around us”. The event was attended by around 30 people.

Albareda explained, “We are all consumers and we can use our power of decision to contribute to social justice and environmental balance on a daily basis”. The aim of the book is therefore to explore our personal relationship with the planet.

During the book launch, there was a very entertaining exchange between Albareda and Enric Vidal, the Dean of the Faculty of Education. Vidal said, “In her book, Sílvia Albareda has managed to encapsulate the complexity of the social, economic and environmental aspects that make up the new paradigm of progress involved in sustainability. And she has achieved this in a very educational way”.

The book, which is published by EUNSA, takes an informative approach to sustainable development and why sustainable behaviour is so vital. It offers answers to questions such as: What are the causes of and potential solutions to the current environmental crisis that is affecting health, food safety and peace? Why does sustainability affect us all, yet is not a political platform? How can we turn sustainability from a mistrusted, “alternative” label into a mainstream commitment to an intergenerational, international way of life based on solidarity? Why does the degradation of the environment compel us to develop a new way of life? How can synergies be established between the economy and ecology?

Sílvia Albareda holds a Degree in Biology from the Universidad de Oviedo and a Degree in Moral and Spiritual Theology from the Universidad de Navarra, where she also obtained a doctorate in Theology. Additionally, she holds a Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture and has a postgraduate qualification in Environmental Education.
