Silvia Cóppulo gives a workshop on communications in crisis situations to students studying the University Master's Degree in Health Management
In the Comprehensive Centre for Advanced Simulation (CISA) on the Sant Cugat Campus, the UIC Barcelona lecturer conducted a workshop focused on crisis management from the communication field using simulation-based methodology.
Simulation as a teaching methodology plays a very important role in the attaining certain skills and is especially useful in training professionals in the health field, as it allows them to put their acquired knowledge into practice in a safe and controlled environment. For this reason, the Master’s Degree in Health Management incorporates simulation as an innovative and differential element focused on four areas: communication, governance and leadership, quality and team management.
Communication in crisis situations was the theme of the workshop given by Silvia Cóppulo, BS in Psychology, a PhD in Communications and a lecturer at UIC Barcelona. Thanks to the recreation of real-life situations, with participation of actors and the use of CISA’s most advanced technologies, Cóppulo explained that during the workshop, “master’s degree students identify the problems and evaluate the solutions to improve patient care, putting into practice their skills in communication, management, teamwork, and informed decision making in crisis situations.” By practicing in a safe and controlled environment, students can work without fear of making a mistake and learn to manage their own emotions and to empathise with the those of patients and their families. “The follow-up analysis that we do as a group allows them to review their actions to improve communication,” the lecturer added.
With the determination to educate and train professionals in the health field to assume the management and direction of institutions, centres or health sector services, the Master’s Degree in Health Management, directed by Dr Boi Ruiz, incorporates simulation methodology as a very effective technique to train future health managers who seek quality, effectiveness and efficiency in the results of their teams, through exposure to realistic and challenging situations in a simulated, controlled and safe environment.
