The Solicitor: A Little-Known Profession in the Legal System
What do solicitors do? What career options are available to them? Should the role be kept in the legal system? On Thursday, 3 May 2012, Ignacio López Chocarro, the Dean and President of the Association of Court Solicitors of Barcelona, responded to these and other questions as part of the continuing education conferences organized by the Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences.
Ignacio López Chocarro, the Dean and
President of the Association of Court Solicitors of Barcelona, described and
defended the modern role of the solicitor in front of an audience of students.
He told them that the role is often unknown and called into question because it
is considered “archaic”.
Solicitors are legal professionals who represent
clients in disputes that are brought before courts and tribunals. He went on to
explain that, within their statutory framework, they collaborate effectively
with the public justice system, serving as a formal legal link between the
courts and citizens involved in legal disputes. They also help cut down on the
number of communication procedures required. The speaker therefore concluded
that solicitors play a key role and should be kept in the legal system in the
future.
