UIC Barcelona School of Architecture students Sandra Bravo, Gabriel Fejzulla and Valentina Risemberg won the 12th edition of the UIC Barcelona Cross-Disciplinary Workshop on Sustainability held on our Barcelona Campus in the “Scientific Poster” category. 

Entitled “Módulos cubierta” (Rooftop Modules), the winning project aims to generate new quality spaces in the Barcelona Eixample that allow us to move towards a type of habitation that can be adapted to exceptional situations such as that caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The project was developed as part of the subject ReFAB Climate, sponsored by Pich Architects. The students worked in an area of this neighbourhood in Barcelona and designed different solutions to provide new uses for the inhabitants of the buildings by using adaptable modules. “One of our designs was a modular piece of concrete, adaptable in terms of its use due to its shape and dimensions, that can function as a seat, a planter, paving, a step or shelf all at the same time,” said the students. “Through this project, we were aiming to take a leap forward in terms of building a more vibrant, greener, and healthier community,” they conclude. 

The Cross-Disciplinary Workshop on Sustainability is an annual event, which has been held since 2009-2010, and is open to the entire university community. In it work is undertaken in an interdisciplinary way to address issues related to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals through conferences, round tables, workshops, and scientific posters. Any UIC Barcelona student can undertake a research projects linked to the theme of the Workshop and take part in the annual competition.
