Students on Sustainability Course Visit ROCKWOOL Factory and CENER Facilities
On Wednesday, 26 November 2014, fourth-year students on the Sustainability 1 subject at the ESARQ School of Architecture took part in the annual outing organized by the Chair of Industrial Construction and the Environment (CEIM), which forms part of the ESARQ School of Architecture. This year, the students went to the ROCKWOOL Factory in Caparroso and the National Renewable Energy Centre (CENER) in Sarriguren.
During the visit to the ROCKWOOL factory in Caparroso, Navarra, the students enjoyed a talk by Miguel Ángel París and Jordi Guivernau from the technical department on operations at the factory, the products they manufacture and their respective applications in the field of sustainability and construction.
ROCKWOOL is one of the most ground-breaking companies in the manufacture of volcanic rock wool and mineral wool, products used in thermal and acoustic insulation and as a fire-resistant barrier in construction. As well as being the leading manufacturer in the field, ROCKWOOL has an environmental management system that guarantees the sustainability of their products and manufacturing processes.
In the afternoon, the students headed to Sarriguren near Pamplona to visit the National Renewable Energy Centre (CENER). There they were given a presentation on the different activities and projects undertaken at the centre and an explanation of the building's bioclimatic design. CENER specializes in applied research and the development and promotion of renewal energy.
The activity this year was attended by some of the sponsors of the ESARQ's Chair of Industrial Construction and the Environment (CEIM), including Teresa Batlle from Pich Aguilera Architects and Jordi Guivernau, a member of the ROCKWOOL technical department. Sustainability 1 is a compulsory subject taken by students in their fourth year at the ESARQ School of Architecture. The subject is linked to the Chair of Industrial Construction and the Environment, which aims to raise environmental awareness in the construction industry through interdisciplinarity and knowledge transfer between university and business.
