This revelation has been confirmed recently by research led by Núria Almiron, researcher from the Department of Communication at the Universidad Pompeu Fabra, on which Marta Narberhaus, lecturer from the Faculty of Communication Sciences at UIC Barcelona, has also collaborated.
This is the first time that a climate change denial countermovement, orchestrated by conservative groups, has been systematically studied in Europe. The study was led by the researcher Núria Almiron from the Department of Communication at the Universidad Pompeu Fabra. Marta Narberhaus, from the Faculty of Communication Sciences at UIC Barcelona; Maxwell Boykoff, researcher from the University of Colorado Boulder (USA) and Francisco Heras, independent researcher, have also participated in the research, which has been published in the international journal Climatic Change.
The research has documented and verified climate change denialist activity over a period of 24 years (1994-2018) by studying messages sent across six European countries and in four languages. The main conclusion reveals that despite the most prominent association between climate change denial and the United States, Europe is also harbouring a denialist countermovement, albeit less influential, led by conservative and neoliberal think tanks.
